Our Impact

The Africa Bioethics Network (ABN) is committed to advancing ethical standards across Africa, addressing urgent issues in health, research, and technology. Some of the activities ABN provides are specialized training in research ethics and open peer review, contributing significantly to the professional development of healthcare and research communities. In collaboration with AFREDAC, ABN fosters a community of practice and builds a strong network of ethical leaders across the continent. Through its webinars with Crossref and eLife, ABN promotes the exchange of knowledge and best practices in open science and ethical research practices.

The African Journal of Bioethics (AJB) plays a critical role in encouraging pan-African harmonization of bioethical issues, improving research ethics standards across the continent. It serves as a platform for in-depth discussions on emerging bioethical topics that are particularly relevant to Africa, including healthcare ethics, medical research ethics, sex and gender perspectives, queer bioethics, human rights, ethical challenges in vulnerable populations, and the ethics of healthcare and research amidst issues like climate change and artificial intelligence. AJB also welcomes submissions on policy, governance, agricultural bioethics, institutional capacity building, and other interdisciplinary topics that are crucial to the African context.

In collaboration with UNESCO, ABN has contributed to the development of the Draft text of the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Neurotechnology. Through funding from UNESCO, organised the Stakeholders’ Validation Workshop on a Survey aimed at Strengthening Capacity Building in Bioethics in Africa. Through these initiatives, ABN influences global standards, fosters cross-disciplinary dialogue, and promotes ethical leadership within the bioethics community.

By engaging in these efforts, ABN continues to drive community-centered bioethics, ensuring that ethical considerations keep pace with Africa’s rapidly evolving healthcare and research landscape.
