Landscape Analysis of Research Ethics Training and Capacity-Building Initiatives in Africa
Research ethics play a crucial role in safeguarding the integrity of research and protecting participants, particularly in Africa, where rapid advancements in genomics, big data, and health research raise critical ethical considerations. This study, titled Landscape Analysis of Research Ethics Training and Capacity-Building Initiatives in Africa: Mapping Successes, Gaps, and Future Directions, aims to map the current landscape of research ethics training across the continent and provide actionable recommendations for future enhancements.

The study employs a mixed-methods approach, incorporating a systematic literature review, quantitative surveys, key informant interviews, and case studies. These methods will provide a comprehensive overview of training initiatives, identify underserved regions, highlight successful strategies, and uncover barriers to effectiveness.

Preliminary findings are expected to reveal significant gaps in capacity building, particularly in resource-constrained regions. Despite efforts by organizations such as the WHO and NIH’s Fogarty Center, challenges persist due to limited expertise and inadequate resources in many African countries. Case studies of successful programs will offer insights into best practices and innovative solutions.

The research is expected to guide policymakers, researchers, and funders by offering data-driven recommendations for improving ethics training. By enhancing capacity-building efforts, the study will contribute to harmonizing ethical standards, protecting research participants, and strengthening oversight mechanisms. This work ultimately aims to advance the quality and ethical standards of health research in Africa, promoting sustainable and equitable progress across the continent.
