UNESCO Stakeholders' Workshop on Bioethics Capacity in Africa

The Africa Bioethics Network hosted a pivotal Stakeholders' Workshop on Strengthening Bioethics in Africa at KAVI-ICR University of Nairobi on December 7-8, 2023. The workshop brought together bioethics experts, researchers, and stakeholders from across the continent to strengthen bioethics capacity in Africa.

Key outcomes included:
1. Launch of a comprehensive survey to assess bioethics capacity in Africa, focusing on:
• Assessment of bioethics governance structures
• Identification of training needs and gaps
• Mapping of bioethics activities across the continent
• Building collaborative networks
2. Framework Development:
• Emphasis on community engagement and cultural sensitivity
• Focus on capacity building and regulatory oversight
• Development of action plans for practical implementation
3. Discussion of Emerging Challenges:
• Artificial Intelligence implications for African healthcare and research
• Data protection and privacy concerns
• Need for Africa-specific policy development

The workshop reported significant growth in ABN membership, with over 130 members from 30 African countries. Members represent diverse fields including research ethics, health, technology, agriculture, and legal areas.

The event concluded with calls for increased documentation of African bioethics cases, enhanced teaching of research ethics, and stronger regional cooperation in bioethics development. The workshop marked an important step in strengthening bioethics infrastructure across the African continent.
